Hot Air Balloon · Tour
Hot air balloon ride over Assisi with winery breakfast
The take-off field is at Cantina Dionigi, a winery in Bevagna, with Assisi on the hillside to the north. The flight lasts about an hour and crosses the Valley of Assisi, a stretch of Umbria dotted with Roman and medieval villages, vineyards and olive groves. The operator calls it the most beautiful balloon ride in the world. What is checkable is the setting: the valley is a two hour drive from both Rome and Florence, and the whole morning runs to roughly three hours from meeting point to return. The crew brings passengers out to the balloon already inflated, and the pilot briefs everyone before boarding. Captain Peter, whom the operator describes as the most experienced balloon pilot in Italy, flies and talks at the same time, naming the towns and Roman sites sliding past below and the centuries behind them. After landing, the crew drives everyone back to the winery for an Umbrian breakfast and a tasting of Sagrantino, the red grown on these hills. The rating is 4.9 from 210 reviews, the highest count of any balloon flight listed for Umbria. Up to 15 people can book together and the commentary is available in English, German and Italian. Pickups are not included, though the operator arranges them at extra cost. Children under 6 cannot fly. Nor can anyone more than three months pregnant, anyone who has had major surgery or a broken limb in the past six months, or anyone with chronic back or neck trouble.
